Deja Vu - It looks like a group of ambitious types have gotten together to attempt
yet another english language periodical in Austria. This one is called Ether, it's
available for free and you can even download a PDF of the current issue. I can
only wish them more luck than their various predecessors have had...

English expat newsletters are easy to do but hard to do well, mostly the editorial
side is anemic and the writers only qualifications are they have a tolerable
command of English and they're willing to work for free. How do I know this?
Because I used to write for one and those were my sole qualifications. Among the
minions, GoGo Paris is probably the best I've come across, well-designed, up-to-
date and wonderful picks. But not all city can be the City of Write. Now Vienna can
claim an anglophone expat pub. Called Ether, the magazine isn't really Conde
Nast quality (or even Hearst quality) but it does have some decent articles and
more than enough event listings. Their inaugural issue is available for download,
PDF style, and contains lively articles about baby killing factories, breakfast
places and a hidden jazz club named Porgy and Bess.

In unserern aktuellen Folge beschäftigen wir uns mit englischsprachigen
Immigranten in Wien. Wo kommen sie her? Wo gehen sie hin? Und: Was trinken
sie dabei? Die ersten Spuren führen uns dabei zu der Online-Zeitschrift ETHER
(www.ethermagazine.at), deren Redakteurin Katie Binns aus England
eingewandert ist. Sie stellt mal ganz schnell klar, dass die Engländer mehr Käse
produzieren als die Franzosen und überhaupt… LEBERKÄSE ist ein Werk des
Teufels! Das bestätigt auch David McGregor, der in Bobby’s Foodstore arbeitet: “I
can’t imagine anyone can eat that; I just can’t stand the stink.” Dafür verrät er uns
aber auch gleich, was gute Fish&Chips wirklich ausmacht.
